Joel has been working in the technical theater industry for over 17 years. Working on local productions during in high school, he quickly found his calling. a degree in Technical Production from the North Carolina School of the Arts soon followed.
In 1993, fresh out of university, Joel found himself in Las Vegas, working as an intern for EFX, the largest production show ever attempted in a city known for its excess. Production Resources Group (PRG), The production company in charge of the design and installation of EFX, was impressed with the young go-getter and Joel was promoted into a permanent staff position in 1994, a position he held until 1997.
During his time at PRG, Joel worked on everything the company did, from industrials to permanent shows, as well as supervising field installations and the shop floor.
In 1997, Joel helped install the rigging system for the Cirque Du Soleil production “O” at the Bellagio. He stayed with that show as the assistant head of rigging in charge of design and maintenance before moving on to install the production show De La Guarda at the Rio Hotel.
Working with De La Guarda, Joel went to Korea as technical director to supervise the installation of the show there. He moved back to Las Vegas, briefly, to install the rigging for Celine Dion’s A “Brand New Day” at Caesars Palace. He was only on that project for a few months before leaving to go to Montreal to work on another Cirque Du Soleil show.
Hired as the project manager of rigging, Joel oversaw both the conventional rigging as well as the acrobatic rigging and performer flying effects for the story-themed show Ka. Having worked on this show at the MGM for the past 3+ years, he is now embarking on a new adventure. |
